A grade scheme is an association between a particular percentage and a symbol (letter grade, text, etc.). Carmen includes some basic grade schemes, including OSU Standard Scheme and Pass/Fail. The Grade Scheme that you choose applies to all grade items in your gradebook, unless you individually change it under Grade Item properties.
Percentage grades CANNOT be submitted to the Registrar's system. If submitting from Carmen to the Registrary, you MUST use a letter-based scheme with only A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and E (such as the OSU Standard Scheme) or S/U. Also, you CANNOT use I (incomplete) or EN (Failing, Non-attendance) grades within Carmen; you must apply these grades in the Registrar's system.
To create your own grade scheme, see Creating a Grading Scheme for instructions and examples. For example, Carmen DOES NOT automatically curve or 'round-up' grades; therefore, if you want to curve grades, you would need to create a custom grade scheme.
1. Access the Gradebook and click
Grades Schemes in the main Grades menu.
2. Choose your default grade scheme.
3. Click Save when done.
To change the Grade Scheme associated with a particular item (including the Calculated Final Grade and the Adjusted Final Grade), click on Manage Grades and then the item's name. Choose the desired Grade Scheme from the Grade Scheme dropdown box.
By default, Carmen shows the grade scheme symbol in the student display. If you don't want students to see grade symbols, click on Grades >
Grade Settings >
Org/Unit Display Options, and uncheck the box next to Grade Scheme Symbol.
