Quizzes: Overview
This overview lists the steps to set up and use Quizzes. Refer to Quizzes: Basic to set up basic Quizzes in Carmen, or follow the links below for step-by-step instructions on more advanced Quiz features.
Instructors often have less control of the setting and circumstances under which students take online quizzes than for in-class quizzes. See Quizzes: Security Tips for ways to increase security on online quizzes to make them more like in-class quizzes.
STEP 1: Add Quizzes to the Navigation Bar
- Use the Edit Course feature to add Quizzes tool to your Navigation Bar so you and your students can Access Quizzes.
STEP 2: Add Questions (to the Question Library)
You may choose to use Respondus as an alternative to creating question items within the Question Library. Respondus can also be used in conjunction with Respondus StudyMate to create Flash-based interactive modules for use by students as study aids. See Using Respondus for additional information.
STEP 3: Set Up a New Quiz
- Set Up Properties to name your quiz and, if desired, link to the Gradebook so quiz grades can be automatically sent.
- Set Up Restrictions to set the time window when the quiz will be active. You will also have the option here to require students to use the Respondus LockDown Browser to take the quiz. (See Using LockDown Browser for details.)
- Set Up Attempts to choose how many times each student can take a quiz.
- Set Up Activities to coincide with competencies and learning objectives.
- Set Up Submission Views to choose what information to display to students after a quiz, such as general message or feedback on the quiz items.
- Set Up Questions and Layout to add questions or the quiz, create question sections, or bonus items. (After adding questions to a quiz, you can also delete, re-order, or move them.)
When setting up Questions and Layout, you can create Random Sections to pull a set of questions from the Question Library and have Carmen choose a random subset for each student, displayed in a random order. See Quizzes: Creating Sections and Random Sections for instructions.
STEP 4: Grade Quizzes Manually, if Necessary
- Carmen automatically grades quizzes (and can also export scores to your Gradebook) UNLESS a quiz contains long answer questions. Long answer questions MUST be graded manually.
