Question Library: Understanding Question Types and Information Items
In the Question Library, you can create questions and information items of the following types:
Single-Answer Question Types
Multiple-Answer Question Types
- Multi-select: Using checkboxes, students can make more than one selection from a group of possible answers.
- Matching: Two columns of information are displayed and students must indicate the appropriate matches of information.
- Ordering: Students place answers in the correct order by typing a number next to each answer.
Free-Response Question Types
- Fill in the Blanks: Student fills in one or more short answer blanks in a statement.
- Short answer: Responses that are short, but longer than one or two words are appropriate for short answer questions; students type their responses in a text box.
- Multi Short-answer: Similar to Short Answer, but instead of requiring distinct answer lists for each response box, instructors can supply possible answers in one large list.
- Long answer: Also known as an essay question, students type their responses into a text box.
If you create Long Answer questions, you will have to manually grade them. See Quizzes: Grade Questions Manually, if Necessary for information.
Mathematical Question Types
- Arithmetic: This question type presents equations or word problems with numbers randomly chosen for the variables based on specified number ranges. Each student receives a variation on the problem.
- Significant Figures: This question type is similar to the Arithmetic type, but allows students to enter answers in scientific notation format. The questions are graded based on what students entered as their significant digits, determined by settings, with tolerance.
Information Types
- Text Information: Use this option to create a quiz item that contains only informational text. For instance, you can use a text information item to present a reading to which several questions pertain. Or, you can use a text information item to provide specific instructions or to label sections of a quiz.
- Image Information: Use this option to insert an image into a quiz. For example, you can use an image information item to present a diagram related to a question in the quiz.
Special Survey Question Type
- Likert Question: This question type is only available through Surveys, not Quizzes. It allows instructors to create a statement that students can respond to using a Likert scale (e.g., Strongly Agree - Strongly Disagree).
