Classlist: SIS to Carmen Role-Mapping

Instructors and other instructional staff members who are entered in SIS will automatically be enrolled in the corresponding Carmen course shells. The table on this page illustrates which SIS roles map to which Carmen roles and provides a very brief summary of the levels of access available to each Carmen role. Click on the Carmen role name for more information.

While SIS will allow a person to have multiple roles in a course, each person can have only 1 role in a Carmen course. If a staff member is assigned multiple roles in a course in SIS, they will be enrolled in the Carmen course at the highest corresponding role. That is, a person with SIS roles of Secondary Instructor and Lab Assistant in a course will be enrolled as an Instructor in the Carmen course.

Course schedulers and instructors are encouraged to consult with one another to determine the appropriate roles for instructional staff. Carmen enrollment data is updated on a regular – generally nightly – basis, allowing changes in SIS to be transferred to Carmen. Please allow 2 business days for changes made in SIS to be reflected in Carmen.

Individual who are enrolled in Carmen courses through the update process from SIS cannot be removed from the Carmen course or have their roles changed within Carmen. Attempts to do this will last only until the next update. To remove or change roles for these individuals, make changes to the corresponding sections in SIS.

Instructors can manually add individuals who are not in SIS to their Carmen courses using any of the available roles. For more information about manual enrollment in Carmen courses, see Classlist: Basic.

Students who are enrolled in a course through Buckeye Link are also automatically enrolled in the corresponding Carmen course shell. This document does not address student enrollment.

Primary Instructor Instructor Has full access to course management, course material, assignments, gradebook, and classlist functions.
Secondary Instructor
TA Assistant Has nearly the same level of access to the course as the Instructor. Has somewhat lower access to gradebook management and classlist functions.
Lab Assistant
Grader
(no access to SIS Grade Roster)*
Grader Can grade assignments and enter grade data for assigned sections.

 

* When the SIS role of Grader is chosen but the individual is also given access to the SIS Grade Roster (to "Grade," "Approve" or "Post"), the individual will not be enrolled in the corresponding Carmen course. If you have someone in the SIS role of Grader with access to the SIS Grade Roster (e.g. an administrative grade poster) who also needs access to the Carmen course, the instructor can enroll that person in the course manually.
