Content: Using the File Manager

Files uploaded to Carmen are listed in the File Manager where they can be organized into folders, moved, renamed, or deleted.

To Access the File Manager:

1. Log in to Carmen and go to your Course Home page.

2. Click on Edit Course on the right-hand side of the Navigation Bar.

3. Choose the option labeled Files Files.

Create a New Folder

Files in the File Manager can be organized in folders. To create a new folder from within the File Manager:

1. Click on Create new folder New in the top right of the File Manager window. A pop-up window will appear asking for a name for the new folder.

2. Type a name and click OK.

3. The new folder, Folder [Name] will appear in the File Manager window. In the File Manager, folders are listed first alphabetically, followed by files (alphabetically) not located within folders.

Move Files Between Folders

If files in the File Manager need to be moved into or between folders:

1. Select the files to be moved by clicking on the checkboxes to the left of the file names.

2. Click Cut selected files/folders Cut in the upper left of the File Manager window. The file will remain visible until it is pasted in its new location. Note, once you click cut, green letters will appear indicating "# file(s) placed in clipboard." located along the top of the File Manager window.

3. Click on the name of the folder into which the files are to be moved. The view within the File Manager will change to show the contents (if any) of the folder.

4. Click Paste Copied/Moved files Paste in the upper left of the File Manager window.

The files will now appear in the window within the new folder. Note, to move out of the folder, press Up Up along the top of the window.

To create a copy of files instead of moving them, click Copy selected files/folders Copy instead of Cut selected files/folders Cut.

Cutting and pasting a file with a topic already associated with it will maintain the topic link in its new location.

Navigating Folders within the File Manager

1. Folders are noted by the Folder Folder icon.

2. Click on the name of the folder to see the contents of the folder; the view within the File Manager will change to show the contents (if any) of the folder.

3. To move back up in the folder hierarchy, click Up Up in the top left of the File Manager window.

You may also navigate folders by clicking on the folder icons in the folder list in the left-hand pane of the screen (located below the Course Admin Tools widget).

Rename Files and Folders

Files that have been previously linked to topics can be renamed or moved without breaking links to them.

To rename files or folders within the File Manager:

1. Click on Rename Rename to the right of the file or folder name.

2. A pop-up window will appear to enter the new name.

3. Type the new name and click OK.

4. The view within the File Manager will automatically update to reflect changes.

Do not use file names that include certain characters, such as " (quotes), * (asterisk), | (vertical bar), \ (back slash), / (slash), ? (question mark), : (colon), < or > (greater than or less than), ' (back tic), & (ampersand), ; (semicolon), and # (pound sign). Carmen may not be able to display files that contain these characters in the name.

Delete Files and Folders

Deleting a folder deletes all files within the folder. To delete some, but not all, files within multiple different folders, open each folder individually and repeat steps for each folder.

To delete files from a folder within the File Manager:

1. Select the files and/or folders to be deleted by clicking on the check-boxes to the left of the file names.

2. Click on Delete selected file(s)/folder(s)Delete in the upper left of the File Manager window.

3. The view within the File Manager will now update to reflect changes.

Deleting files from the File Manager will not automatically delete the link in Content Manager. Users will receive an error in the Content Manager when clicking on a link directed to a deleted file.

Export / Download Files and Folders

This process creates a zipped (compressed) file of the documents you select. You may leave these in the zipped state or you can unzip them in the normal manner for your operating system.

1. Select all files or specific files and folders by clicking on the check-boxes to the left of the file names.

2. Click Zip FilesZip Files in the upper right of the File Manager window.

3. When the pop up window opens, click Save.

4. Select a location on your computer to store your file. You can rename it as needed.

5. Click on Save.
