.bdat - BASIC programming data file
.ccp4 - data file for x-ray/microscope imagery
.cns - Windows 2000 Client connection manager export file
.dat - Database file, extension used by many different applications
.do - Digital line graph
.doc - Word documents / word-processing documents from Word-compatible apps
.docx - Word documents from Microsoft Office 2007
.dwg - AutoCAD drawings
.ent - SGML character mapping
.fig - Geometry figures (various programs)
.flv - Flash-based video for online/streaming distribution
.gif - Graphic file, may be animated, parts may be transparent, best for line art/limited colors
.htm/.html - Webpages
.iam - Inventor CAD (computer-assisted design file) assembly
.idw - - Inventor CAD (computer-assisted design file) - drawing
.ipn - - Inventor CAD (computer-assisted design file) presentation

.jpg - Graphic file, best for photographic images
.lim - compressed-file archive (limited)
.m - Mathematica functions/commands, also MATLAB function or script
