Content: Working with Other Media Sources

Although you can upload materials directly to Carmen, you can also link to other media and content sources. This is the recommended option if your file sizes (individually or as a group) are relatively large.

Three media and content sources available to the OSU community are:

Media Manager developed by the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences specifically for OSU faculty and staff. Organize and share collections of files in a wide range of media types, including common data, image, video, and audio formats. You can also set your own security to control access. Visit mediamanager.osu.edu for more information.
Media Services provided by Learning Technology's Classroom Services. Store large media files, especially media in streaming formats (such as Windows Media and QuickTime). See Placing Files on the Streaming Server for instructions. If you have questions about streaming media, call 292-9689 or email streaming@osu.edu.
eReserves in Carmen provided by OSU Libraries - Share library electronic reserves, often copyrighted material, with only the participants in your course. The eReserves and Copyright Help Center at the OSU Libraries can scan materials and upload them into your Carmen course. The Help Center also provides copyright consultation services and investigates permissions for course use. Materials placed in a Carmen course are subject to the same copyright restrictions as items distributed in other learning environments. See the Copyright Help Center at OSU for more information.

Instructions

Using other media sources within a Carmen course is a two-step process:

Place (or Locate) the Media Files
Add a Link in Carmen to Media Files

Step 1: Place (or Locate) the Media Files

Before working in Carmen, you'll need to place your media files on the appropriate server. Please contact the group in charge of the media or content source directly for information or assistance.

When your content is ready, you will have a URL that points to it.

If working with Media Manager or Media Services files, you will need to create a link to the URL from within Carmen (as explained in Step 2 below).
If using eReserves, University Librarians can create a link within your course and you won't need to complete Step 2 yourself.

Step 2: Add a Link in Carmen to Media Files

Once you have a URL that points to the content, you can add it to your course as a link. There are two recommended ways to link to external content:

QuickLink - If the external content is intended to stand alone with no additional information, a link can be placed into the Content Manager as a QuickLink Topic. See Add a QuickLink Topic for details.
Web page with a link - If additional information, such as a list of discussion points or questions, needs to accompany the external content, a link can be placed in a Web page along with other page content. See the HTML editor instructions to Insert a QuickLink for details.
