Grades: Creating a Grading Scheme
Show me Creating a Grade Scheme.
1. Access the Gradebook and click
Grades Schemes in the main menu.
2. Click
New in the toolbar.
3. Name your scheme (such as "Pass/Fail" or "History 101 Scheme").
4. Create a Short Name to navigate to the scheme quickly.
5. Define the Ranges and enter Symbols to associate with your grade ranges.
- Carmen begins with the lowest percentage (0%), so enter the symbol for lowest grade (e.g., an “E”, a “U”, etc.) first.
- For each grade symbol/grade range, the Start % is the bottom of the range and the Assigned Value % is the top of the range. The range must be a percentage, so the available digits are 0-100.
- To add ranges, click
Add Ranges and if desired, type in the number of ranges you would like to add in the box provided. To remove ranges, click
Remove.
Example Schemes
Carmen does NOT round grade values up, so you might want to consider this when entering your Grade Ranges.
- For a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grade scheme, enter U under Symbol and 50% under Assigned Value. Then, in the following row, enter S under Symbol, 51% under Start, and 100% under Assigned Value.
- For a subjective grade scheme, enter grade ranges with corresponding text-based descriptions, such as 90 - 100 = 'Excellent', 80 - 89 = 'Good', 70 - 79 = 'Average', 60 - 69 = 'Below Average' and 0 - 59 = 'Failing'.
- For a scheme that rounds up to the next grade range if a grade is .50 percentage points from the next highest grade, enter grade ranges with 2 decimal points, such as 89.50% - 100% = ‘A’, 79.50% - 89.49% = ‘B’, 69.50% - 79.49% = ‘C’, and so on.
When submitting grades to the Registrar through Carmen, the Final Grade must either use the letter-based grade symbols available in the OSU Standard Scheme (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, or E) or use S/U for a "satisfactory/unsatisfactory" grading option
6. If desired, set a Color from the drop-down menu to visually represent each grade range.
7. Save your grade scheme.
8. To set your new scheme as the default, click on the gray arrow next to it. A pop-up window asks you to confirm your change; click yes.
9. Click Save when done.
To permanently remove a grade scheme that you had previously created, click
Delete and select the schemes you wish to delete.
