Grade categories are like folders that allow you to group similar assignments. For example, if students write several papers during the quarter, you can create a "Papers" category. See Creating Grade Categories.
Grade items are assignments for which students receive grades. Grade items can be grouped under Grade Categories. For example, if you give 10 quizzes during the quarter, each quiz is a grade item, and all can be grouped under a Grade Category called "Quizzes." You can also create Grade items that stand-alone (they are not grouped under a larger Grade Category). See Creating Grade Items.
