Grades: Import into Grades from CSV

Show me Activate Course Show me Importing Grades.

Grade data and grade items (columns) can imported into Carmen from a text file.  The import format for grades is .csv (comma separated values). The file itself, as well as each individual grade column, must be properly formatted for the import to work.

1. To prepare a .csv grades file for import, export your gradebook to .csv to obtain an example/template of the .csv format. See Export to CSV from Grades for details. (Even if your gradebook is empty, the correct column headers will be created and all of your student ID information will be available. The "Grade Sample Import File" that is accessible from the Imports Grades area in Carmen is a generic file that does not reflect OSU-specific information.)

Any data you import will overwrite data already in your Carmen gradebook. However, a blank cell in your spreadsheet will not overvwrite / delete existing data. If desired, you can import data only a subset of your students or your grade items. You can delete unwanted rows and columns from your spreadsheet before saving in .csv format. You can also leave cells blank.

Only Numeric, Pass/Fail, Selectbox, and Text grade items, and the Final Adjusted Grade can be imported.  Attempting to import other types of grade items will result in errors.

When importing grades, you can have columns for Points grade (or the equivalent information for Pass/Fail, Selectbox or Text items), Weighted grade, and/or Grade Scheme. Only the data in the Points or equivalent column will actually be imported.

2. Access the Gradebook, click on Enter Grades Enter Grades in the Menu, and click Import Grades Import Grades in the toolbar.

3. Click Browse and select your .csv file.

The headings for new grade items in your spreadsheet must be properly formatted.  Refer to headings from your exported template to determine the necessary information and format.

4. Click Import to begin processing the file. A status message labeled Errors and Warnings Found appears:

Importing large classes (e.g. 200 users and 50 items) may take some time.

5. When the import is complete, review your Student List to confirm the changes have been applied.
