Grades: Overview
This overview lists the steps to set up and use a gradebook. Refer to Grades: Basic to set up and use a basic gradebook in Carmen, or follow the links below for step-by-step instructions on more advanced Gradebook features.
STEP 1: Set Up Grade Calculation Method ⇒ Show me
- Choose what type of grading system you want to set up:

- Points,
- Weighted, or
- Formula.
- Choose how grades will be calculated and released to students.
STEP 2: Select Grading Scheme ⇒ Show me
- Accept the default OSU Standard Scheme, or create your own grading scheme (e.g., Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) that complies with the Registrar's requirements.
STEP 3: Modify Display Options ⇒ Show me
- Set your Personal Display Options. These settings affect your personal settings only, not how students or other instructors see grades. They influence ALL the courses for which you are an instructor.
- Set your Course Display Options, which affect some of the grade details you and your students see.
STEP 4: Create Grade Categories and Items
- Create categories of assignments (such as exams, quizzes, papers, etc.). ⇒ Show me
- Choose options such as whether to hide the class average from the students or to drop the lowest grade within a given category.
- Create individual grade items within categories (such as mid-term and final items in the “exams” category) or as stand-alone items. ⇒ Show me
- If needed, create items for extra points and bonus items.
STEP 5: Enter, Calculate and Release Grades
- Enter grades by student, grade item or category, or in Spreadsheet View. ⇒ Show me
- Preview student grades.
- Calculate final grades. (If needed, make changes to the adjusted final grade). ⇒ Show me
- Release final grades to students.
- Submit final adjusted grades to the Registrar. (Note: You MUST post grades via the Registrar's system for your grades to be officially recorded.) ⇒ Show me
- Export grades in comma-separated value (.CSV) format. ⇒ Show me
- Import grades from .CSV to Carmen. ⇒ Show me
Grade items and final grades can also be exported or imported in CSV (comma separated values) format for use with other applications. See Export to CSV from Grades and Import into Grades from CSV for instructions.
