Follow these steps to set up a new quiz in Carmen. For best results, work through the steps in order. For information on advanced Quizzes features, see Quizzes: Overview and follow the links for step-by-step instructions.
To begin, log in to Carmen and go to a Course Home page.
Click Edit Course >
NavBars and then click the Bottom Left tab.
1. Highlight Quizzes (under Inactive Links), and then click the right arrow (>).
2. Click Save.
3. Click Go to Course on the upper right to return to your course. You should now be able to see Quizzes in the toolbar.
Click Quizzes >
Question Library to add questions to the Question Library so you can retrieve them as needed.
1. Choose Question from the Create New drop-down menu, and then click Go.
2. Choose a question type and click Go.
For details on question types and setting up questions in the Question Library, see Understanding Question Types and Information Items.
3. Set up questions. Details vary by question type (see Understanding Question Types and Information Items for links to detailed instructions), but set up for most types includes:
- Enter a Title so you can easily identify the question later (this title will not be seen by students).
- Enter a Point Value for the question.
- Enter the Question Text.
- If needed, set enumeration and style for answer choices.
- Type answer choices in the boxes provided. Click
Add Option if you have more answer choices than text boxes displayed. If you have fewer, click
Remove to the bottom-right of each empty answer box.
- Assign weights in the boxes to the right of each answer. If the question has only one correct answer, then its weight is 100%. If partial credit is to be given for any answer, then assign its weight appropriately. The total weight may exceed 100%, but no single answer may exceed 100%.
4. Click Preview to view your question as it will appear during use and grading. Click Save to save the question and return to the main page, Save and Copy to save the question and create a new question of the same type and that retains the copied properties, or click Save and New to continue creating questions of the same type.
5. Repeat as needed to create a question bank.
See Importing Questions for instructions on how to import questions from a text file or from Respondus.
Instructors often have less control of the setting and circumstances under which students take online quizzes than for in-class quizzes. See Quizzes: Security Tips for ways to increase security on online quizzes to make them more like in-class quizzes.
On the Manage Quizzes page, you can use the 'Quick Edit' tool to make a quiz active or inactive, change the category it is associated with, and change the number of attempts. To use Quick Edit, click the box next to the quiz name, then click the
Quick Edit Quizzes.
Click Quizzes >
New Quiz.
(When you click New Quiz, Carmen begins at the Properties tab; the parts of this step continue left-to-right through the remaining tabs.)
1. Name the Quiz.
2. Optionally, select a Category to link the quiz to, thus allowing quizzes to be grouped by category on the quiz list page.
2. Select a Grade Item to link the quiz to -- the Grade Items you've previously created will be in the drop-down menu. (We encourage users to create all Grade Items within the Gradebook before linking them to a Quiz. For more info on creating Grade Items, see Create Grade Categories and Items.)
Although it is optional, linking a quiz to a Grade Item allows Carmen to auto-export quiz grades to the Gradebook. For this option, check allow automatic export to grades.
3. Select allow attempt score to be seen immediately upon completion so Carmen will grade quizzes as soon as they are completed. Note that long-answer questions must be manually graded.
If allow attempt score... is not enabled, you must set attempts as marked in the 'Grade Quiz' page in order for the Gradebook to be populated with attempt scores.
4. Select optional advanced properties, such as allowing hints, receiving a notification email once a student has completed the quiz, and security properties, such as disabling the right-click feature and paging feature.
5. Expand the Messages menu to enter a question description or introduction.
6. Expand the Page header/footer menu to enter a header and/or a footer.
4. Click Save Quiz.
After setting up quiz properties, click the Restrictions tab.
1. Select Active in the Status box when you want students to have access to a quiz.
2. If you want the quiz to only be active for a certain period of time, click the boxes next to Has start date and Has end date, and enter the dates of availability.
3. If needed, attach Additional Release Conditions, such as requiring students to view a certain content topic before viewing the quiz. To add a new Release Condition, click Create and Attach; click Attach Existing to add a Release Condition previously created.
You must save your quiz before you can add Release Conditions. See Release Conditions for more information.
4. If desired, select Security Options related to using the Respondus LockDown Broswer (see Using Respondus LockDown Browser for more details):
- Required to take this quiz: Check this box to force students to use the LockDown Browser when taking the quiz. Students won't be able to start the quiz unless using the browser, thus preventing them from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a quiz.
- Required to view quiz feedback and results: Check this box to restrict students from viewing quiz feedback or results unless they are using the browser. This option makes it difficult for students to print quiz results and make them available to other students.
5. Enter optional Advanced Restrictions that relate to Quiz security, such as having students or a proctor enter a password to begin the quiz, or entering an IP address so students must take the quiz at a particular lab, for example. See Setting Up Quiz Restrictions for more information.
6. Adjust options related to Timing:
- Set a Time limit in minutes (default is 120 minutes). Check Enforced to enforce time limit, which automatically shows a clock to students.
- Set a Grace period value, which determines how many minutes the student has after expiration of the Time Limit to submit their quiz before it's flagged as late.
- Specify how to handle Late Submissions; click the Help icons following each option for details.
7. Click Add Special Access under Advanced Availability to override availability and timing settings for specific students, such as those working with Disability Services or those students who'll be taking the quiz outside of any specified time limits you've set. For more information on setting Special Access conditions, see Setting Up Quiz Restrictions.
8. Click Save Quiz.
After setting up quiz restrictions, click the Attempts tab.
1. Select the number of Attempts Allowed for quiz-takers. (If this is an assessment quiz, retain the default of 1 attempt.)
2. For quizzes with multiple attempts, select a method of Overall Grade Calculation.
3. Click Save Quiz.
After setting up quiz attempts, click the Activities tab.
1. If competencies and learning objectives have been set up, then it is from the Activities area of the quizzes tool where you can create and assign activities that will be used in the assessment of learning objectives. See Rubrics and Competencies for more information.
2. Click Add Activity to add an activity and associate it with a Learning Objective, if applicable.
3. Click Save Activity when you are done.
After setting up quiz activities, click the Submission Views tab.
1. The Default View will be displayed to students upon quiz completion if you do not add an additional view. The Default View displays the date they submitted the quiz, does not display the quiz questions, and does not display the quiz statistics.
2. Click Add Additional View to change the default settings. Give this Additional View a name.
3. Enter a Message to display to students after finishing quiz, such as: "Your quiz has been submitted successfully".
4. If you would like this View to be available starting at a particular day/time, enter this information under View Restrictions.
5. Under Show Questions, make appropriate choices as to what questions/responses to reveal after a quiz is taken. Click
(Show Help) for an explanation of each choice.
Retain default of "No" under Show Questions for a security level closer to an in-class exam. You can still choose to display Statistics. You need to have previously checked allow attempt score to be seen upon completion (under the Properties tab) in order for the Show Answer choices to be meaningful.
6. Click the box next to Score so students can see their grade immediately upon quiz completion (note that they will only see the points for questions that can be auto-graded; long-answer questions cannot be auto-graded).
7. Click the appropriate boxes next to Statistics to allow students to see class average and score distribution.
8. Click Save View when you are done.
Set Up Questions and Layout
After setting up submission views, click the Layout/Questions tab.
1. Click Add/Edit Question to add or remove quiz questions or sections.
2. Click
Import to import questions from your Question Library.
3. On the Import page, choose Question Library for the Source Collection. Choose Collection Root as the Source Selection to show all questions and sections in your Question Library, or choose a specific section to narrow your options.
4. Check the box next to each question to import.
5. Click Save.
To create Bonus Questions, click Add/Edit Question, click
Edit Values, and check boxes in the Bonus column. Click Save.
To create new questions within a quiz, click Add/Edit Question, choose Question from the Create New menu, and click Go. Then, create new questions as in the Question Library. (See Question Library: Add Questions for details.)
When setting up quizzes with items from the Question Library, you can create Sections (to divide a quiz into parts) or Random Sections (to pull a set of questions from the Question Library and have Carmen choose a random subset for each student, displayed in a random order). See Quizzes: Creating Sections and Random Sections for instructions.
If a quiz is auto-graded and the scores are sent to Gradebook, you do not have to grade quizzes. Some cases under which you might want to manually grade your quiz include:
Click
Grade Quiz to manually grade quizzes.
1. You can either Grade by Attempts or Grade by Questions. Click the appropriate tab after making your choice. See Grading Quizzes Manually, if Necessary.
- To Grade an Attempt for an individual student, click on the individual's quiz attempt you wish to grade. The user's entire quiz is displayed including question data, the user's answers and the correct answers. Correct answers will appear with a
Correct Response; wrong answers will display a
Incorrect Response. You can leave overall feedback in the Attempts Comments textbox, or feedback on individual questions in the Add Feedback textbox below the question.
- In contrast, Grading by Question allows you to change grades for all users at once. Click the Questions tab to view responses broken down by question. Click on a question title to view statistics on and/or re-grade that question. Click the
Grade Icon to modify the grade for a version of the question.
2. To override an existing auto-grade, enter a new value in the Score textbox.
3. When finished manually grading a quiz, click Re-Calculate to tally the new score.
4. Click
Save Results.
