Role Switch
Carmen allows you to "switch" roles to see what your course looks like from the student point of view. Using Role Switch, you will be able to view content, post discussions messages, upload files to dropbox, participate in chats, etc.
To "switch" to the student role:
1. Log into Carmen and go to your Course Home page. If you are in a course site but not on the Course Home page, click Course Home in the NavBar.
2. Select .Student from the Role Switch widget dropdown menu.
In addition to the Student role, the Role Switch dropdown menu includes other roles that can be assigned. See Carmen Roles for more information.
3. When you are done viewing the course from the Student view, return to your Course Home page and use the Role Switch widget to switch back to your Default Role.
Role Switch shows the course from the perspective of a "generic" student. As such, it does not apply to viewing Grades, using Dropbox, or to actually taking a quiz or survey, which are generated individually for a specific student. Release Conditions are also predicated on the activities and group memberships of specific students, so are not previewable.
You can preview Quizzes/Surveys, Dropbox, and Grades in the following ways:
- Within Quizzes and Surveys, a
Preview exactly replicates the student experience (including randomized questions for each attempt and requiring the use of the Lockdown browser, if enabled). You can answer questions, which will be autograded and the results displayed as a student would see them. These results are not, however, saved for manual review or grading.
- Similarly, if you use the Role Switch widget and submit a paper to the Dropbox, the experience will replicate what the student sees and does (including acknowledgement e-mails). However, the file you submit will not actually be saved.
- Within the Grades tool, you can view any student's gradebook view by clicking the student's name in the Grades List and then clicking
Preview at the top of the screen.
