activate course - A setting in Edit Course that instructors can change to allow students to access a course website; courses that aren't activated DO NOT appear in students' course lists.

blog - A tool that allows professors and students to post their own observations or commentaries, view what others are blogging about, and, if comments are activated, post responses.

calendar - A tool for displaying Upcoming Events (such as project due dates, office hours, in-class events) to your course participants.

chat - A tool that allows you to communicate with students in real time, similar to instant messaging.
classlist - A directory of names, emails, and group settings which provides you with quick access to a full list of course participants. The Classlist is updated nightly with information from the Registrar's database. As students add and drop courses through the Registrar, changes will be reflected in the Classlist with 48 hours.
competencies - A tool that allows instructors to track information about the knowledge, skills and abilities students are expected to acquire in a course.

content - Carmen's overall term for documents, images, audio/video, or links shared with students during the course. Carmen's Content tool assists instructors in organizing the materials.
copy course components - A utility that lets instructors copy existing components from one course to another. Components include course files, quizzes, discussion forums and topics, and dropbox folders.

course home (see homepage) - The course homepage is the first page users see after clicking on the course name. A course homepage is comprised of widgets that provide information and links to tools. This page can be modified by the instructor

course offering - The organizational unit name for one instances of a course. For example, Calculus 101 is a course, but Calculus 101 (Fall 2002) and Calculus 101 (Winter 2003) are different course offerings.
CSV - Comma-separated values. A file format used for importing and exporting data arranged in rows and columns. Commas mark the separation between columns and line breaks mark the row.

discussions - A series of online messages that have been posted as replies to each other. This is an asynchronous communication tool, meaning that users can read and respond to the postings at any time.
dropbox - A tool within Carmen that allows learners to electronically submit assignment files. These files can be accessed through Carmen at any time and location by the instructor at a later date.
edit course - A utility in Carmen that allows participants with course-editing privileges (such as instructors) to modify their course. For example, Edit Course can be used to activate courses and to add tools to the navigation bar.
email - Tied to both Carmen and the OSU email system, this tool allows users to send email from within Carmen. The Email tools is closely integrated with the Classlist tool.
eReserves - A service from Ohio State University Libraries to provide electronic library reserves, often of copyrighted material. eReserves can be linked to from Carmen.

forum - Categories used to organize Discussion Topics; at least one Forum with at least one Topic in it must exist in order for a Discussion to work.
glossary - A tool for storing definitions and cross-references to course-related terms.
grades - A tool within Carmen that is used to track student grades. Students can view their personal grades.
groups - A tool that allows instructors to divide students into multiple teams within a single course. Unlike sections, instructors control the number, size, and membership of groups in a course. Students can be sorted into groups in the Classlist and Grades tools.
guest accounts - Short-term sponsored accounts needed to enroll people from outside Ohio State in a Carmen course.
homepage- This is the first page users see when logging in to Carmen or going to a course. "My Home" is the first page when logging in to Carmen and is controlled by the Carmen Support Team. The "course home" is the first page for a course and can be modified by the instructor .
HTML Editor - A tool for adding simple HTML content to add to courses. The HTML Editor can be reached through many other tools, such as News and Content.
join - The JOIN feature allows administrators / instructors to create Carmen Spaces in which users enroll themselves. JOIN is not available for Carmen courses listed in the Registrar’s Master Schedule.
known issues - System bugs that affect Carmen users when dealing with specific tools or tasks. These issues are beyond the control of the Carmen Team, but are reported to the vendor of the software that powers Carmen.
learning repository (LOR) - A central storage location within Carmen for learning objects, or pieces of content that can be reused, edited, modified, and combined.
LiveRoom - An online interactive chat tool for real-time (synchronous) discussions.
LockDown Browser - A special web browser that instructors can require students to use when taking online quizzes that prevents accessing other websites.
locker - A tool within Carmen that is used to store files. The contents of a user's locker are accessible only by that user, unless files are designated as “public.” Public files are viewable by all the participants in the user's courses.
Media Manager - A system at OSU for storing and organizing media collections, including image, video, audio, and data files. Collections stored in Media Manager can be linked to from Carmen.
module - An organizing device for course content used to group content Topics together. For instance, a Module might be created for each week of the quarter, for each Topic to be covered, or for each type of material (readings, homework assignments, etc).
navigation bar ("navbar") - The menu across the top of a Carmen course site that contains links to course tools. Faculty can easily add and remove tools from the Navigation bar.
news - The first block of information the user sees after logging into a course. Instructors generally post announcements or important notices in the News section.

org defined ID - a number that uniquely identifies each user within Carmen.
pager - A tool that allows participants to contact other class members who are online on a one-to-one basis.

preferences - Settings that control how information is displayed onscreen.

question library - A central storage location for question objects (specific questions or groups of questions) that can be reused, edited, modified, and combined in any way desired to form quizzes or surveys.
quicklinks - An option within the Content tool and the HTML Editor that allows the insertion of links to websites, course files, or other Carmen tools (such as discussions or quizzes).
quizzes - A tool used by the instructor to create online tests. A variety of question types are available, including multiple choice, true or false, and short answer. The questions may be selected randomly from a set of questions, or may be the same for each student.
release conditions - A utility that allows instructors to set conditions under which tools or content become available to students. For example, a release condition can be used to release additional readings after a specific quiz is completed.

role - Roles define the access privileges that users have for within each Carmen course.
role switch - An advanced tool for instructors that allows them to see a course as it appears to a participant with another role (such as student).
roster (see classlist)
rubrics - A tools that helps instructors to evaluate performance in learning activities.
section (see course offering, classlist) - Students enroll in a course section through the Registrar’s process. The section is associated with a call number. A course offering will have at least one section associated with it and visible in the classlist. Some course offerings will have multiple sections (for instance, large lecture-recitation courses or cross-listed courses).

streaming media - A service at OSU for storing streaming media and other large files. Files stored on the streaming server can be linked to from Carmen.

surveys - A set of questions designed to gather feedback, rather than assess learning.

topic - In terms of Content, a topic is an item in the table of contents that links to a document, multimedia file, outside website, or item in the course. Content Topics are grouped together under Modules.
In terms of Discussions, a Topic is a discussion themes. Discussion Topics are grouped together in Forums.

widget - A customizable object that can be placed in a course homepage to display information, links, and other course functions. Widgets appear on the screen in boxes with title bars. Some widgets are provided by the system; instructors can modify if and how they are displayed in a particular course. Instructors can also create custom widgets for use in their own courses.
