blog - A tool that allows professors and students to post their own observations or commentaries, view what others are blogging about, and, if comments are activated, post responses.
calendar - A tool for displaying Upcoming Events (such as project due dates, office hours, in-class events).

classlist - A directory of names, emails, and group settings which provides you with quick access to a full list of other students taking the course and your instructor. The Classlist is updated nightly with information from the Registrar's database. As students add and drop courses through the Registrar, changes will be reflected in the Classlist within 48 hours.
content - Carmen's overall term for documents, images, audio/video, or links shared with students during the course.

discussions - A series of online messages that have been posted as replies to each other. This is an asynchronous communication tool, meaning that users can read and respond to the postings at any time.
dropbox - A tool within Carmen that allows users to electronically submit assignment files. These files can be accessed through Carmen at any time.
email - Tied to both Carmen and the OSU email system, this tool allows users to send email from within Carmen. The Email tools is closely integrated with the Classlist tool.
eReserves - A service from Ohio State University Libraries to provide electronic library reserves, often of copyrighted material. eReserves can be linked to from Carmen.

forum - Categories used to organize Discussion Topics; at least one Forum with at least one Topic in it must exist in order for a Discussion to work.
glossary - A tool for storing definitions and cross-references to course-related terms.
grades - A tool within Carmen that is used to track student grades. Students can view their personal grades.
groups - A mechanism to divide students into multiple units within a single course; accessed through the Classlist.
HTML Editor - A tool for adding simple HTML content to add to courses. The HTML Editor can be reached through many other tools, such as Discussions and Personal Homepage.
LiveRoom - An online interactive chat tool for real-time (synchronous) discussions.
Locker - A tool within Carmen that is used to store files. The contents of a user's locker are accessible only by that user, unless files are designated as “public.” Public files are viewable by all the participants in the user's courses.
Media Manager - A system at OSU for storing and organizing media collections, including image, video, audio, and data files. Collections stored in Media Manager can be linked to from Carmen.
navigation bar ("navbar") - The menus across the top of a Carmen course site that contains links to course tools.
news - The first block of information the user sees after logging into a course. Instructors generally post announcements or important notices in the News section.
pager - A tool that allows participants to contact other class members who are online on a one-to-one basis.

personal homepage - A space in Carmen that users can customize.
quizzes - A tool used to take online tests designed by the instructor. A variety of question types can be used, including multiple choice, true or false, and short answer.

surveys - A set of questions designed to gather feedback, rather than assess learning.

topic - In terms of Content, a topic is an item in the table of contents that links to a document, multimedia file, outside website, or item in the course.
In terms of Discussions, a Topic is a discussion themes. Discussion Topics are grouped together in Forums.
widget - A customizable object that can be placed in a particular area of a course page to display information, such as news headlines, or provide a function, such as web search.
