I can't find my Carmen course. Where is it?
A course shell is created for every course listed by the Registrar's office. To find your course:
If you can't find your course, check with your department to ensure you are listed as the instructor of the course with the Registrar's office. Please allow 48 hours for enrollments to be updated after changes are made to the Registrar's data.
If you are listed as the instructor of record but still cannot find your course, write to carmen@osu.edu and provide the quarter/year of your course and the course name and number (including the department) or the university course call number (or both).
I can't find my cross-listed course. Where is it?
If your course is cross-listed through the Registrar's office, check under the other department to see if your course is listed there. (Note that cross-listed courses are listed in Carmen under the department that appears alphabetically first. For example, if your course is listed both under Anthropology and Economics, it will appear in Carmen under Anthropology.)
If you had requested that your Carmen course be merged with another course and you now can't locate it, please contact carmen@osu.edu for further assistance.
My students can’t find my course. Where is it?
When your course is ready for student access, remember to activate it to make it visible to students. See Activate Course for help.
If your course is active and your students still can't locate it, they may need to click the plus (
) to expand their list under My Courses.
If only a few students can't see the course, it is likely they haven't been added to your classlist by the automated enrollment process that runs each night. If the course doesn't appear 48 hours after a student has added the class at the registrar's office, have them call 8 help, or write to carmen@osu.edu and provide the quarter/year of your course, the full course title or the university course call number (or both), the student's OSU internet username, and the date the student registered for the course.
I need to change the role of my TA or another person. How do I do that?
The Carmen support team or 8help (688-HELP or carmen@osu.edu) can change an assigned role for you. Please specify the following: the instructor's name, your name (if not the instructor) and role, the quarter/year, the department, and the course numbers and titles, as well as the role you'd like to assign the person, his or her name, and his or her OSU name.#.
A student who added my class does not appear on the Carmen classlist. Does that means something is wrong?
The registrar's database updates the Carmen database overnight. Students who add classes should appear in the Carmen classlist after 8 a.m. the following day, although this process can sometimes take longer during the beginning of the quarter. If students do not appear in the Carmen classlist 48 hours after adding the class at the registrar's office, you or they should write to carmen@osu.edu. Provide the quarter/year of your course, the full course title or the university course call number (or both), the student's name.#, and the date the student registered for the course.
topI need to add a student to my course. How do I do that?
Instructors can add participants to a course; however, adding a student to a course in Carmen does NOT officially enroll the student from the Registrar's perspective. See Enroll Participants for instructions on adding a student to a course.
See Using Carmen with Non-Academic Courses or Non-OSU Guests for instructions about adding non-OSU participants to a course.
topI need to delete a student from the course. How do I do that?
Instructors can remove students a course; however, removing a student from a course in Carmen does NOT officially un-enroll the student from the Registrar's perspective. Students wishing to un-enroll must do so through the Registrar's office -- otherwise, Carmen's automated enrollment process will re-enroll the student based on Registrar data. See Unenroll a Participant for instructions on removing a student from a course.
To unenroll another instructor, a TA, or participant other than a student, please contact the Carmen support team or 8help (688-HELP or carmen@osu.edu). Specify the following: the instructor's name, your name (if not the instructor) and role, the quarter/year, the department, the course number and title, and the student's name and OSU internet username.
topMy course requires large files, but I have heard large files should not be stored in Carmen. What are my other options?
It is true that the Carmen system is not built to store large audio-visual files or collections of images. For two alternatives for storing these kinds of media and linking to them from within your Carmen course, please see Working with Other Media Sources.
PowerPoint presentations and PDF documents can also be large. It is extremely important to optimize these files when you are creating or editing them. Optimized files will be smaller (faster to upload and download) and may also be more accessible to students using adaptive technology. See File Optimization/Accessibility for details.
topI want to reuse materials from another quarter. How do I do that?
Carmen includes a feature that allows instructors to copy existing components from one course into another course shell. See Copy Course Components: Overview for details.
topI have a class with many sections, each with its own course shell. I'd like to have them brought together under one course shell. How do I do that?
Merging sections from different Carmen courses into a single Carmen course
requires assistance. Please write to carmen@osu.edu with the request. Specify the quarter/year, the department, the call number and full title of the destination course, and then list the same information for all of the course sections you'd like combined into the destination course.
I have a class with many sections, but they all appear under one course shell. I'd like them to appear in separate Carmen sites. How do I do that?
Splitting sections into separate Carmen courses requires assistance. Please write to carmen@osu.edu with the request. Specify the quarter/year, the department, the call number and full title of the course that you want to separate into individual courses. A new course will be created for each of the sections in the original course.
If you need to separate only some of the sections from the original course, list the sections which stay in the course and provide a separate list of those sections to remove into their own courses.
