Small groups in Professor Karla Roehrig’s Alcohol and Society course use discussions to prepare for in-class debates--each group gets a separate forum for private strategizing. Private discussions provides a convenient way for her students to collaborate on group projects and gives her insight into their planning process.
Professor Roehrig says:
Many of my students (all seniors) have jobs and families that make it difficult for them to get together for face-to-face group meetings in order to prepare for in-class group tasks. Carmen makes it easier than carrying out an email discussion.
Professor Roehrig assigns students to groups within her Carmen Classlist, and then assigns each group the same set of discussion topics. Only members of the groups and Professor Roehrig can read the private postings.
Professor Roehrig appreciates the statistical analysis provided by Carmen to show use of the forums by each group member.
Using Groups with Carmen's discussion tool is easy to setup. Here are some links to instructions.
