Transcript: A Quick Look at Carmen

< Return to A Quick Look at Carmen

Welcome! We’d like to show you some of the highlights for the latest version of Carmen. Let’s take a look at Content, Grades, Discussion and Groups -- some of the most widely used Carmen tools.

From an open course, let’s go to Content. Along the left side of your screen, notice the Main Menu and its options. You'll see a menu like this in many Carmen tools. This menu allows you to choose between the main areas for your particular tool. Selecting an item on the main menu displays related tasks in the top tool bar.

Items relevant to Managing Content include creating modules and topics as well as ordering the content information. From here, you can share and organize information with your students.

Let’s go to View Content to see how the Content area will look to your students.

Now, let’s look at the Grades tool where you can view and enter student grades. The Main Menu on the left side of the screen  gives you access to options needed to setup and manage grades.

The Spreadsheet view allows you to enter or edit individual grades.

The Gradebook allows sorting by name and also allows sorting by grade item.

Let’s explore the Discussion tool, which is designed to create online forums and topics.

A discussion topic can be linked to a grade item and the Assess Topic tool lets you assign grades to student postings. These grades can be automatically transferred to the Carmen Gradebook.

Finally, Carmen includes a Groups tool that expands the functionality of other Carmen tools.

After adding Groups to the toolbar, you can create as many groups as you need. The Groups tool allows you to automatically set up Discussion areas, Lockers, and Dropboxes that are available only to group members.

The Groups tool makes collaboration and communication more efficient and manageable for you and your students.
