Use of Student Data in Research

For information about using student work in research, see the Human Subjects Overview (pdf) from the Office of Responsible Research Practices.

Retention of Student Data and Courses

Data retention periods in Carmen follow the university's record retention schedules and are as follows:

  • Course data includes all the material uploaded or generated by faculty in the Carmen system. TELR retains course data for two years past the end of the quarter in which the course was taught. For example, Autumn 2005 courses are up for removal in Winter 2008.
  • Student data includes all work in the Carmen system that students generate or upload, plus their grades. TELR retains this material in Carmen for two quarters past the end of the quarter in which the course was taught.

Note that students hold the copyright for any work they produce for a course.

See Backing Up Data for instructions on creating backups of Carmen course and student data.
