About the Project
In September 2003, CIO Ilee Rhimes charged a committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students to make recommendations concerning the use of wireless in teaching and learning. After gathering information, this Wireless Pedagogy Committee made seven recommendations:
-
Pedagogical considerations should precede technological solutions.
-
The CIO should appoint a wireless implementation and oversight committee comprising technologists and members from the academic community.
-
Ohio State should build and support a single wireless campus network.
-
Instructional access to wireless must be free to the user.
-
Ohio State must invest in additional instructional design and technical support for faculty.
-
TELR should solicit proposals and fund a limited number of wireless instructional technology pilots.
-
Ohio State must invest in professional development for information and instructional technology staff.
See the Wireless Pedagogy Committee's final report (pdf) for additional information.
In January 2005, Ohio State University leaders (including OAA's Coordinating Council, Council of Deans, Senior Fiscal Officers and the University Senate Fiscal Committee) initiated the OSU Wireless Project to build and support a wireless network on campus. More information about the project can be found at http://wireless.osu.edu/.
As a part of the OSU Wireless project, the Office of the CIO appointed TELR to promote best practices in mobile learning and to sponsor associated professional development opportunities. This website was created in partial fulfillment of that charge.
